Private Direction

It begins where advice ends.

Private Direction is one-to-one direction for senior leaders preparing for consequential live moments. The strategy may be sound. The message may be agreed. The deck may be finished. The words may already be written. But somebody still has to stand up and deliver them. Private Direction works on that performance.

Why it exists

A senior leader can be highly effective in private and still find that something changes under formal scrutiny. The room is different. The audience matters. The language becomes more prepared. Time becomes more visible. Every pause, gesture and shift in tone begins to carry weight. A gap can open between the authority a person possesses and the authority the room actually receives.

Logeion works in that gap.

Advice is not direction

Senior leaders often arrive with excellent people around them. Strategy, Comms, IR, speechwriting, media preparation and other specialist advice may already be in place. Private Direction works on a different layer: what happens when the person enters the room. A director watches what is actually happening.

Not what was intended. Not what is written in the notes. Not what somebody hopes the audience will understand. What is actually reaching the room. Where authority is being lost. Where something feels too rehearsed. Where a pause would say more than another sentence. Where warmth is missing. Where effort is showing.

Where the person onstage is saying one thing and communicating another. I give direction. We rehearse the change.

There is no ideal executive performance.

There is only what this person, this audience and this moment require. Sometimes someone needs to do less. Sometimes they need to take up more space. Sometimes confidence is not the answer. Sometimes uncertainty makes someone more credible. Sometimes a difficult answer needs a moment of silence before it.

Sometimes the prepared line is exactly right. Sometimes it needs to be abandoned. Private Direction is not about imposing a fixed model of how a senior leader should look or sound. It is about seeing precisely what is needed and finding a way to make it available to that person under pressure.

Why a director?

Professional actors are not directed because they lack talent. They are directed because the performer cannot fully see the performance from the audience’s position. The same is true of leadership. You cannot completely inhabit the moment and observe yourself from outside it at the same time. That is the director’s role.

To hold the whole performance in mind while you are inside it. To notice what has shifted. To recognise what the room is receiving. To give the note that changes something. And to know that the same note will not work for every person.

There is an event coming.

If the outcome matters enough to prepare the strategy, the numbers, the message and the words, it may be worth rehearsing the person who has to deliver them.

Logeion directs the performance itself.
